Believe me, I’ve been down that 100% natural skincare route before. You know what happened? Not. Very. Much. In fact, I was always wondering why my skin looked so blah. We’ll get to the reason why in a minute…
Let me not forget to mention that I’ve also been down the department store skincare route (spent thousands), the dermatologist recommended route (also very pricey), and the cosmetic dermatologist recommended route ($$$). Never did my skin look good.
That’s right, it looked dull, red, bumpy, and inflamed. And it required makeup – daily.
It’s no secret that I’m concerned about the health of my skin. Okay, REALLY concerned. Yes, I even do cosmetic acupuncture. I post about what I’m doing to maintain a healthy glow and what I’m doing to prevent the signs of aging all the time on Instagram stories. While it’s extremely important to me that my products have natural ingredients, at the same time, I also want them to work. I mean, doesn’t everyone?
WHAT IS COLD PROCESSED SKINCARE?
So let’s discuss my latest discovery. It’s a good one. Cold processed skincare. New term to you? Yah, was for me too. TBH – at first I didn’t really care about what it meant. I didn’t know that I should care about HOW skincare products are created in the lab…why should I care?
Well, here’s why I should care (and you too). After many discussions with the President and Co-founder of OZNaturals, Angela Irish, about her natural skincare brand, product formulation, ingredients, and the term “cold processing”, I figured I should understand what it means to cold press skincare. Whoops, I mean COLD PROCESS skincare!
IT WORKS SO MUCH BETTER!
Cold processed skincare may be the difference between actually SEEING results and NOT SEEING results.
Do I have your attention?
If you’ve ever wondered why your skin doesn’t really look too great despite all your skincare efforts, it’s likely because your products weren’t cold processed! When you cold process skincare ingredients, it means that you do not subject them to high heat. What happens when you use high heat on skincare ingredients? Well, big problem my friend. BIG. PROBLEM. I’ll get to that in a minute.
While basically EVERY skincare brand goes down the route of high heat processing, OZNaturals is about the the ONLY company IN THE WORLD going the cold processed route. Crazy I know. There are a handful of products from other companies that may include a cold processed ingredient here and there, but no line that is entirely cold processed!
So let’s make this easy to understand by first defining what it means to cold press juice, because I know you’ve heard of a cold pressed juice. But what does a cold pressed juice really mean, though, and why is it better?
COLD PRESSED vs. ORDINARY JUICE
Ordinary (Centrifugal) Juicer –
These less expensive, run of the mill juicers utilize a fast-spinning metal blade that generates heat. The juice is separated from the flesh via centrifugal force. Centrifugal juicers generate HEAT, which destroys some of the enzymes in the fruits and vegetables that you’re juicing. Which is why you’ve heard that cold pressed is better!
In addition, the heat oxidizes nutrients. So, all in all, you’re looking at a juice with lower nutrition when it’s not cold pressed.
Cold Press (Masticating) Juicer –
Cold press juicers crush the fruit and/or vegetables using a slow mastication method without the use of added heat. Most of the nutrients stay intact and enzymes are not destroyed by heat (as in the centrifugal juicing method). Cold pressing results in better preservation of the vitamins, minerals and nutrients that naturally exist in fresh produce.
Okay, so if that makes sense, cold processed skincare should make a lot of sense too. But, let’s compare both methods of processing skincare just to be super clear.
COLD PROCESSED SKINCARE vs. HEAT PROCESSED SKINCARE
Heat Processed Skincare –
- Most ALL skincare companies use heat and chemical emulsion to formulate their product with temperatures reaching nearly 200 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Heat is used to kill any bacteria or contaminants in the ingredients. Heat also destroys the product’s active ingredients and reduces their effectiveness.
- The product is easier to mix when heated as ingredients are melted and cooked together.
- Heat helps to create a better texture.
- Many ingredients can be added into one jar as heat makes it easy to blend.
- Beneficial qualities of key ingredients are diminished or lost. Ex – you may think you’re buying a product with 20% Vitamin C, but it’s likely much less than stated on package. After heating the ingredients, the Vitamin C has lost much of its potency. When you open the bottle, it may only be 10% potency and then 5% potency by the time you finish the bottle.
Cold Processing –
- Cold Processing takes place at room temperature without any added heat or petrochemicals, which allows the active ingredients to remain fresh and highly potent as intended.
- Heat is not used which means that clean, high quality ingredients – free of bacteria and other contaminants – are required.
- Higher quality ingredients must be used in cold processing as there are higher standards of quality control.
- Key ingredients and beneficial qualities stay intact.
WHERE TO GET COLD PROCESSED SKINCARE PRODUCTS?
You can see why cold processed is the way to go. Ingredients remain potent, active, and intact – as intended. Hallelujah, your products are ACTUALLY going to have a positive and noticeable effect on your skin! Heat kills so much of the good stuff (along with the bad) which affects the potency of the end product. No Bueno.
It makes me wonder why more brands don’t use cold processing to make their anti-aging skincare. As you now know, high temperatures destroy the product’s active ingredients and reduce their effectiveness. Heat processing is the easier and cheaper way to go and skincare companies can slip by using lower quality ingredients.
You’re probably wondering where you can get your hands on cold processed skincare.
Thank goodness, you need look no further than OZNaturals. Their anti-aging skincare line is 100% cold processed and the quality of their ingredients is top notch. In addition, OZNaturals uses a natural preservative system called Biopreserve Complex™ which eliminates the need for traditional, harmful preservatives and toxic chemical ingredients.
I have been using OZNaturals product line for several months and love them! My favorites right now are the Vitamin C serum, Vitamin C Cleanser, Bamboo Enzyme Facial Scrub, and Ocean Mineral Toning Mist. The Dragon’s Blood Facial Serum just launched and that’s also a good one – great for inflammation and healing.

So Let’s Recap:
Cold Processed skincare does not use heat so that ingredients remain active and potent. Most every skincare brand in the world uses heat processing to formulate and emulsify their ingredients. Heat mixes and melts ingredients together, helps with texture, and kills bacteria and contaminants. In addition, heat also destroys active ingredients.
So, when you think you’re buying a product with 20% Vitamin C, well you’re likely not. The 20% Vitamin C may actually be only 10% after being processed and then it may lose another 5% after opening the bottle. So now you’re looking a product with 5% Vitamin C!
Cold processing requires a higher standard of ingredients since heat is not used. Choosing cold processed skincare may be the difference between actually SEEING results and NOT. I highly recommend making a shift to cold processed products from OZNaturals as they are the only company that is 100% cold processed. Your skin will thank you!
