I wasn’t concerned with having healthy skin when I was younger. I guess because I had a collagen-rich face. But now that I’m in my 30’s, healthy skin is my prime concern. Healthy skin is where it’s at! Why? Because a glowy, collagen-rich face is the key to aging gracefully.
Pretty much everything I do these days directly correlates to my obsession with having great skin health. What I eat, my natural skincare products, sleep, drinks, lifestyle, fitness, travel, etc. Which is why I was ALL OVER cosmetic acupuncture when it was introduced to me a few months ago.
Cosmetic acupuncture goes by a few different aliases: acupuncture facelift, acupuncture facial rejuvenation, beauty acupuncture and/or acupuncture facial. Maybe there’s more…?
Cosmetic acupuncture is where an acupuncturist inserts needles as thin as a hair into key areas in your face to target areas of concern and to rejuvenate the face. You’ll need to commit to two treatments twice a week for the first 6-8 weeks, at which time you can go on a monthly maintenance plan if you wish. It’s not a quick fix like Botox or filler, per se, but regular treatments will give you incredible results.

Cosmetic Acupuncture is a Natural Botox Alternative…And More!
What’s really interesting about cosmetic acupuncture is that it could be a natural alternative to Botox. If you don’t like the idea of injecting toxins every few months or if you’re pregnant (need a good bra?) or breastfeeding and can’t get your regular injections, you have cosmetic acupuncture!
Nevertheless, Botox diehards may want to do cosmetic acupuncture in addition to Botox (as long as you wait a period of time beforehand). The reason why is because Botox does NOTHING for your quality of skin. Botox will NOT improve your skin health. Sorry to say. But cosmetic acupuncture will!
For this reason, cosmetic acupuncture cannot be compared to Botox. Where Botox freezes the facial muscles so that they can’t move or wrinkle, cosmetic acupuncture stimulates blood flow and collagen production causing wrinkles to diminish over time. Naturally.
Traditional vs. Facial Acupuncture
So we all know what traditional acupuncture is, right? Tiny needles are inserted into the skin all over the body to help with pain and to treat various physical, mental, and emotional conditions. Think allergies, headaches, infertility, stress, digestive problems, depression, and more. It’s a very popular practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the West.
Cosmetic acupuncture varies slightly from traditional acupuncture in that the focus of the treatment is specifically anti-aging on the face. I was surprised that I hadn’t really heard of cosmetic acupuncture before, seeing as many celebrities do it themselves. I guess that’s why they call it a best-kept secret! Ha! I’ve seen photos of Jessica Alba, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kim Kardashian getting cosmetic acupuncture…and these ladies are the queens of aging gracefully! So perhaps they’re onto something…
My Cosmetic Acupuncture Results Thus Far…
Well, these celebs most definitely ARE on to something. I started biweekly cosmetic acupuncture treatments at the end of March and it’s the end of May now, so it’s been two months. Things I notice on myself thus far.
- Reduced Fine lines near eye when I smile (I smile a lot!)
- The disappearance of my dimple wrinkle (more collagen?)
- Overall Plumper skin (more collagen?)
- Healthier skin
- Radiant and glowy skin
- Lifted appearance
- Past mole removal caused a divot in my jaw – divot is more filled out now
So let’s get into the nitty-gritty of cosmetic acupuncture including what a treatment looks like, what it does to your skin, and expected results from treatments.

WHAT HAPPENS AT A TREATMENT?
I go to Modern Acupuncture in Mission Valley. While they specialize in cosmetic, their acupuncture treatments also include traditional acupuncture. Which is awesome! Kill two birds with one stone. K?
- You walk into a dimly lit room and sit on a heated massage chair that fully reclines.
- While you lay there completely relaxed, the acupuncturist inserts needles (as thin as a strand of hair) into key areas in your face.
- You’ll also get traditional acupuncture for whatever is bothering you. I normally work on strengthening my adrenals and fatigue (since I don’t get too much sleep right now with the baby). I’ve also asked for immunity points and lower back pain points (again, heavy baby!).
- You can specify if you want to target certain lines, wrinkles or areas of the face. You can also focus on overall tone or hyperpigmentation. I normally focus on smiles lines and crows feet.
- Cosmetic acupuncture treatments at Modern Acupuncture take just 20 minutes! Any longer and you might experience tiredness following your treatment.
DOES IT HURT?
- In general, No. Needles are as fine as hairs, so they don’t bother you very much.
- There are some areas in the face that are more sensitive to the needle such as smile lines, cheeks, and near the nose.
- I actually tend to like the more ouchie ones because I know that they’re doing their job!
- There’s no downtime. You look completely normal following treatment.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
- Needles are inserted into key areas in the face causing microtrauma to the skin which activates collagen production.
- Cosmetic acupuncture stimulates greater blood flow to the face.
- Increased blood flow improves the delivery of oxygen, fluid, hydration, and nutrients to the area causing a dewy appearance. Also corrects tone and texture.
- Acupuncture needles are inserted into specific points that help relax tight muscles and strengthen elongated muscles. This restores the natural function of the muscles and results in a more lifted and toned appearance.
EXPECTED RESULTS:
- Subtle, natural-looking changes to the skin over time.
- Fine lines diminish or disappear as the body works to repair the trauma created by needle – repairs and fills the area around needle.
- More lifted and toned appearance. Hence “acupuncture facelift”.
- More blood flow to the face – helps to correct color, texture, and imperfections.
- Increased blood flow improves hydration and nourishment which produces a dewy appearance. AKA Glow!
- Improved overall health IN ADDITION to appearance.
- You may see immediate results as blood flow is stimulated to face. Long-lasting results after 12 regular treatments…then you may want to move to a monthly maintenance plan as part of your anti-aging skincare and self-care regimen.
So Let’s Recap:
Cosmetic acupuncture is similar to traditional in that tiny needles are inserted into the skin. The difference is that cosmetic acupuncture specifically targets the face and anti-aging, whereas traditional’s purpose is to heal the body of aches, pains, sickness, and other physical or mental issues. Expect to see a revitalized and nourished skin, brighter complexion, diminished fine lines and wrinkles, more collagen and thus a more youthful appearance.
Cosmetic acupuncture is a Botox alternative and is 100% natural and non-invasive. Although cosmetic acupuncture will not freeze your wrinkles, like Botox, it will stimulate collagen production thus causing wrinkles to diminish naturally on their own.
Long-lasting results can be seen after 12 bi-weekly sessions and monthly treatments are recommended as part of a maintenance plan. Cosmetic Acupuncture is best accompanied by a healthy lifestyle with the use of natural skincare products and a nourishing diet.
