There are some similar trends from fall 2011 that have carried over into fall 2012 including military, bordeaux, leather leggings, and smoking slippers. There are also new trends that are stepping up front and center such as an emphasis on masculine fabrics and styles, which Downing refers to as, “borrowed from the boys.”

10 Handbag, Accessory, And Clothing Trends For Fall/Winter 2012 According To Neiman Marcus:
1. Borrowed From The Boys
Much of men’s fashion has been transformed for women. Borrowed men’s fabrics include tweed and herringbone print; borrowed men’s style includes colorful tuxedo jackets. Luxe trims and embellishments give traditional menswear a feminine touch. Bordeaux continues to be on trend and adding anything in this color to your outfit will be fantastic! Shown below are three different looks that are “borrowed from the boys” including a thick knit menswear-inspired sweater in bordeaux or oxblood. The next look is a peplum dress done in a gray, wool, plaid fabric that could very easily have come from a gentleman’s sport coat. The last look is a tuxedo-style jacket with fur embellishments over a black and white, digital print Monique Lhuiller dress.
