Us English are a very patriotic people. Although we may not look it behind all the frown and complaints about the rain, we love our country and nothing shows this love more than a national event.
When we first heard about the Royal Wedding and all the hype began many cynics and I’ll admit, myself included, brushed it off with a ‘who cares’. However, last Friday’s Wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton had the whole of Britain and beyond completely captivated. Thousands of people gathered in the streets and parks of London just for one glimpse of the beautiful Bride and her Prince as they drove down Pall Mall and had their first kiss on the famous Buckingham Palace balcony, just like William’s mother and father 30 years ago…even I shed a tear at the site of Kate in her magnificent pure ivory dress.
After months of speculation the rumors turned out to be true! The dress which was surrounded by much excitement was a couture creation of Sarah Burton – the creative director at Alexander McQueen and the reining successor of the brand. It was designed based upon the dress worn by Grace Kelly, the Princess of Monaco, on her wedding day and it was perfect! So simple and yet so detailed in the lace top and veil. It suited Kate’s modern regal manner very well.
The bridesmaid’s dress deserves a mention too – also a unique creation designed by Sarah Burton – and although I am unsure about my opinion on Pippa Middleton wearing the same color as the Bride, she none the less looked stunning!
The festivities didn’t stop at Buckingham Palace. Across the country streets were closed off for celebratory street parties. People dancing, drinking, singing, crying and lightly mocking the crazy fascinators worn by Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie as well as the fact that it appeared someone forgot to tell Victoria Beckham that she was going to a wedding not a funeral so she’d remember to put on a brighter color and a smile. All that aside, nothing could bring down the day, even the Great British weather obliged and held off the promised rain – which was much appreciated by the Bride!
