Pose first popped up on my radar after reading an article on TechCrunch in January called “Pose: A Photo Sharing App For Fashion And Shopping That Just Raised $1.6 Million.” After downloading the app and playing around, I soon lost interest – not because the app was lame (because it’s not), but because I didn’t feel a sense of community or beneficial sharing-based methods. To be fair, the app had just recently launched so this would explain why there weren’t many active Posers yet!
iPhone fashion app, Pose – “showcase your latest style finds, follow friends & trendsetters as they shop in real-time, & track the latest releases from top brands & retailers. Wherever you are, Pose helps you discover inspiring styles from around the world.”
Basically, Pose lets you:
1. snap a photo of yourself pose-ing or snap a photo of a fashion item
2. name the brand in your pic, disclose store location, and spit out the price paid
Then:
1. Other Posers in the community can “love” your pose
2. Other Posers in the community can “follow” your poses
I was really very pleased when Pose popped back into my network, shortly before WWDMAGIC in Las Vegas. Through Twitter, word-of-mouth, and FMM’s Macala Wright – who published an article called MAGIC Trade Show Partners With Mobile Fashion App Pose – I discovered that Pose was the app to use for showcasing your wardrobe for Magic. What’s really neat is that attendees could view each other’s WWDMAGIC wardrobes by tagging pics with #magiclv.
The #magiclv hashtag was really what put Pose on the roadmap,
…at least for me, because I’m someone that wants to feel a sense of community when taking part in something. Basically, I don’t want to feel like I’m the only one there…where’s the fun in that?
By the time we got to WWDMAGIC, we all felt like we already “knew” one another – even though we had never met before. What’s more, loyal #magiclv Posers were popping up all over big TV monitors strategically displayed inside Magic and I couldn’t help but recognize passerby’s. You know when you walk by someone and you try not to look at them, but you do, and you also know they’re trying to do the same thing? Yah? Well, that’s what happened at Magic.
Fortunately, we aren’t as petty as we were in high school, so we did actually formally introduce ourselves and connect – which is the whole point of a community! It’s hard to imagine maintaining real relationships via Pose (fashion app) or even Twitter (virtual world), but this is a reality!
WWDMAGIC’s partnership with Pose was a stellar idea (kudos to the decisionmakers on this one), because not only is Magic the best space for discovering new trends, but it is also now a space for tastemakers to show off! For the first-time ever at WWDMAGIC, tastemakers shared their favorite fashion items via Pose for all the rest of us to see!
If there is any advice that I can offer to Pose, it is that they should make connecting with topics much more accessible. Currently, hashtags are only followable via Twitter – which means the Poser has to share their Pose on Twitter and hope for other Pose users to find them. Pose users must be able to follow a topic via Pose and thus the hashtags NEED to be clickable in-app. Once this happens, the Pose community will grow exponentially!
Best of Pose-ing 🙂
P.S. – When’s the next #PoseMeetup? FNO New York City, Boston, La…?!!? Tell us who you’ll be formally (or informally) meeting up with on Pose 🙂
