This past weekend I spent some time in New York City. Because I was traveling on the Acela from Boston, I needed to fit my weekend outfits into a carry-on…Sorry, no pulling a Rachel Zoe this time!
My first thought before taking on this packing task was ‘how will I be able to stuff enough clothes into my carryon so that I am able to be stylish early morning in Meatpacking, chic for lunchtime in West Village, and still grooving during late afternoon in Midtown‘? Ahhh! This type of wardrobe planning for a 3 day stay?

The answer is much more simple: pretty, bright colored, silk dresses that take up no space! According to Ken Downing – Neiman Marcus’ Fashion Director – this fall is all about “polish and elegance” and “the return to ladylike dressing”.
Announcing the Fall 2011 trends Ken said,
The polished perfection of a lady like attitude brings a glamorous, dressed up spirit to the season. Saturated shades of bordeaux, complimentary and contrasting shades add modernity through colorblocking. The allure of fur and the added surprise of leather bring an edge to the sophisticated lady. A pump and hand held handbag and bold gold jewelry complete the look that adds up to a spectacular fall season.
For Friday’s look, I tried to achieve what Ken describes as “lady chic” by combining retro stylings with ’50s sophisticate. Brightly-hued silk dresses for day can be extremely elegant or they can look very cheesy. The look is deliberate and polished. The key to success is in the details. In other words, the color of your shoes, coat, jewelry, accessories, and proverbial handbag must not compete for attention with your dress or you will get the wrong type of attention…
How to wear bright silk dresses for day:
- Choose a knee-length dress and opt for short boots or booties
- Pair colorful silk dress with neutral coat and footwear (in my case browns)
- Wear neutral colored jewelry and accessories in glitter or metallic (in my case golds, metallics, & shimmers)
- Wear neutral colored stockings (in my case nude, but black would pair nicely w/lilac)
