I love shopping for fashion items that support charity. Now ladies, you too can showoff your fashion sense, while also supporting a wonderful cause! The mother and daughter team, Mary Buckley & Meaghan Buckley, have worked with educators in some of New York’s public and parochial schools, experiencing firsthand how even as students achieve academic success in high school and look forward to a college career, they may face many financial difficulties. Mary and Meaghan Buckley’s nonprofit organization, The Freshman Fifteen, supports educational opportunities for some of New York City’s most talented, but financially disadvantaged, college-bound students. According to Mary,
Each year many of our neediest high school seniors overcome the pitfalls of our most challenging neighborhoods, graduate from high school, and are awarded college financial aid packages. Their determination sets an inspiring example for all of us and we believe these students represent our best hope to break the cycle of poverty that grips our inner-city.
Most college financial aid packages provide all or part of tuition, room and board, and some provide for books; however, many of these students lack additional support for the all-important transition into the world of college life – such as dorm room essentials.
Why The Freshman Fifteen is different: the organization provides dorm room essentials that many cannot afford and that so many of us take for granted. The Freshman Fifteen provides each selected student with 15 items that every new student should have when they arrive at school. This list includes: sheets, comforter, blanket, pillow, towels, laundry bag, bathrobe, alarm clock, flip flops, trash can, shower tote, desk lamp, storage containers, backpack, and basic school supplies.
How The Freshman Fifteen Raises Money: the organization makes handmade, gorgeous beaded bracelets. 100% of the proceeds of the bracelets supports the cause. Email Meaghan to buy these fabulous bracelets.
