I was leaving for vacation in less than two days. Every day of the week prior to leaving I had scheduled a different beauty appointment and there was no room for error. After all, I was traveling to NYC and the Hamptons to vacation with an old flame… I had to look GOOD!
The Fiasco at the Brow Bar
I had made an appointment to get my brows done at a Benefit Brow Bar in Macy’s. I arrived and was told that the person doing my brows would be right there. Ten minutes later I asked if she was actually coming. The girl working the counter said that the brow tech had experienced a death in the family and she was trying to “get it together” over a coffee break.
Um…what was I supposed to say to that?? I told the girl that maybe this wasn’t a good day and I could come back some other time.
Now, I do have sympathy for this person but I don’t think I want someone that just experienced a tragedy in the family doing my brows, you know?
I Guess I’ll have a Celebrity do it instead!
Suddenly a ray of light shone down from heaven and Christi Harris of Christi Harris Cosmetics appeared. Christi, a Texan with a larger than life personality, told me she would do my brows for free if I would try “eyebrow planing”! I had no idea what it was or what I was getting myself into, but of course I agreed; I was on my lunch break and I just plain needed my brows done.
Waxing, plucking and threading are not good for your brows because the hair does not always grow back. Overplucking can be permanent. – Christi Harris
No more waxing appointments and Hello Hamptons! Over paninis and prosecco one day, my old flame mentioned that something was different about me…my eyes looked bigger and brighter. I just smiled and thanked him for the compliment – I knew that the difference was in my brows!
6 steps to create your perfect brows with a How-to video below:
Materials:
- Precision Brow Planer – the blade tool
- Adda Brow – You can just use a brow wax for this.
- Color Blend Trio – Brow powder. Try to find one that comes with a few shades.
- Duo Diffuser – Highlighting powder will work for this.
- Contour brush – Any powder shadow brush will work for this.
- Designer/Definer brush – For this, you need a hard angle brush and some type of brush you can use to “stipple” I’ve looked around and can’t find anything quite like Christi’s. It has bristles that are more wiry…you could probably use some type of eye makeup or liner brush that has firmer bristles
- Diffuser/Refiner brush- A brow brush and a fan brush. For the brow brush, you can use those disposable mascara brushes too.

Directions:
1. Measure the brow. In this step, you decide the beginning, ending, and arch of your brow using the Designer / Definer Brush.
2. Outline the brow. Connect your beginning, ending, and arch on the top and bottom sides of the brow using the Designer / Definer Brush. This is the area you will be filling in.
3. Add depth and color. Use the black end of the Designer / Definer Brush and stipple in Adda brow (waxy stuff) followed by the Colorblend Trio in the shade best suited for your brows.
4. Brow Planing. Use the planing device at the top of the brow with a downward motion to create shape and remove unwanted hair. You can use this in the area between your brows and beneath them as well. Since you have drawn in the shape you want, using the planing device is what creates the perfect, precise shape.
5. Diffuse color. First, take the spooly end of the Defuser / Refiner brush and use it to brush through the brows and even out the color. You can also clean up the shape a little with a Q-Tip or your finger if you need to at this step. Next, use the fan end of the Defuser / Refiner brush to apply the diffusing powder to get the exact shade that you want. You can follow with the spooly brush again if you have excess product to remove.
6. Add brow gel. At this point, I recommend going over your brows with brow gel to hold your brows in place as well as define the brow hairs.
Relax: I will admit, during the process I was scared at times. When you are defining and filling in your brows, they appear very dark and severe at first. I thought I looked like Dracula and I wanted to jump out of the chair! With some blending and diffusing, they turned out amazing! I was definitely hooked.
Finishing Tip: I highly recommend blending a brow highlighter right above your brows to polish the look. I use Benefit High Brow and I love it!
