The Rule: don’t even think about wearing white after Labor Day!
The Reason: from being snobby and so upper class that when on vacation you need to prove your wealth status by owning a summer wardrobe & also a winter wardrobe, to Vogue & Harpers Bazaar editors avoiding the New York City rain that would seriously dirrr-ty their chic work attire and eventually being forced to stop wearing white entirely during rainy months. Thus, the white standard was set for everyone else.
Now that we know the rule, lets break it!!! You aren’t friends with the types of people who choose to follow the white standard anyways.
For those of you thinking,
I’m definitely going to wear my whites this weekend before it’s too late…
No, No, No! You are all very wrong 🙂 It is still hot, and as long as it stays hot, continue to wear white. Yes! Stark, snow white. Lightweight white fabrics are probably hanging inside your closet on their last hoorah this season, but please don’t stash them away until next summer. Those nice linen pants of yours and sheer white kaftans – although they do not have a place during the winter months – will be FABULOUS for your impromptu resort vacation!
One of Tim Gunn’s style tips in his Guide To Style is to be comfortable in what you wear! Now, I personally think the “Don’t Wear White After Labor Day” rule holds true for flared white jeans, but these are not to be confused with white skinny jeans – which I happen to wear all winter long! There is nothing more comfortable and crisp during the winter months than white skinny jeans, boots, & poncho.
I recently was thinking about the “white” rule and decided to put together an outfit for fall that incorporated none other than my classic white shorts. When paired with an equestrian-styled blazer (the blazer pictured below happens, actually, to be my actual equestrian jacket), white shorts are perfectly transitioned for fall.
Bottom Line: if you want to be fashion-forward this Labor Day weekend, do NOT wear white! That’s right! Save your whites for after Labor Day! Disagree? You might just want to reevaluate your stance, ’cause things happen to get a little more exciting when rules are broken!
